Making Peace With Your Body

Scripture teaches us that our bodies are temples of God--- the place where the Holy Spirit resides (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). The Bible also clearly emphasizes that the human body is a temporary tent that we will cast off at the point of physical death (2 Corinthians 5 1-5). Someday we will receive a brand new shape and form...Until then, it is our responsibility to honor what Paul aptly described as our "perishable", "weak", "natural" bodies by viewing them from a balanced biblical perspective rather than from the narrow-minded approach of our culture.

Something beautiful happens when a woman lets go of the fear, shame, and anxiety she feels about the way she looks and accepts her body, rich with imperfection, as a gift of God. When she stops despising certain aspects of her appearance---her wide hips, pesky cellulite, double chin, droopy abdomen, small breasts, or bony backside---and smiles at the imperfect reflection in the mirror. When she learns to appreciate her body with the humor and grace God alone can give. When she warmly welcomes her husband with her body.

If we are to be on comfortable terms with our sexuality, we need to make peace with our bodies, including the way we look. Achieving a delicate balance in the way we view our physical form and appearance requires a certain measure of self-acceptance. And as we learn to appreciate our God-given uniqueness with genuine joy and humility, we find a measure of peace about ourselves that the world cannot give us. How we look is no longer a ruling factor of our identity. Who we are in Christ matters to us more. ---Debra Evans

  3. Jan and Mara,
I think this is so hard for most women in the society in which we live. It shouldn't be this way. When we don't worry over every little wrinkle and bulge it truly is freeing. God loves us just the way we are! It truly doesn't matter if others do or not... Our value comes from our Creator.

  4. Oh, I love this so much. As a woman, I find it a struggle to be happy with my self on the outside even though I do know what matters is on the inside. Thank you for this encouraging reminder!
