Family Support

Nobody has ever before asked the nuclear family to live all by itself in a box the way we do. With no relatives, no support, we've put it in an impossible situation.------Margaret Mead

This quote is so true. It used to be that the grandparents were only a little run down the road or across the field. Your Aunts, Uncles and cousins were just a hop or skip away. Not today. Our closest family member is 20 minutes from our house. But most are at least 30 minutes to an hour away. I sure do miss having family around..... someone to count on... someone to visit with.... when life gets boring you run over and see what your family is doing....People don't stay in the same town like they used to. Families need support that they are not getting.  These are just thoughts, that do not have answers. At least I don't have any answers.... Do you? Your thoughts on this please.?.

Amy Jo

  1. Amy Jo: A very profound post. It's true it's not like it used to be. I could just walk for 1 minute and be at my Grandmother's door. Now, Jake is 4 hours away, on a good traffic day. Can't be helped though, and we try to make the time together count for something most special. I think that is why blogging is so great. Your good friends are just a fast click away..Happy Thursday..Judy

  2. Judy,

Thanks for your thoughts on this. That is so true.....I know my Mom looks at my blog every day to see what we are up to... So do other family members and friends. It is great. This quote just made me ponder the current way most of us live, without family support close by. Sometimes I long for the Walton type of lifestyle :)

  3. Hi Amy Jo,
I think about this same issue a lot. Our nearest family is 30 minutes away. Most of our family is with 1-1/2 hours driving distance. Others are on the other side of the continent. It is true that we are emotionally closest, to the ones that are physically the closest. But then, They have always made an effort to "stay close" Some members that live fairly close don't even seem to want to take the time to get together? I guess phone calls and texting has helped me stay close to family. But good old fashioned family get-togethers are still what keeps this family close at heart! It takes a little more effort. And even a little more money with some. So I guess we should be thankful for modern ways to communicate!
    Blessings,
